Setting Boundaries Without Giving Up on Someone

Families are often told to set boundaries and given no instruction on how. The result is either no boundary at all, or an ultimatum delivered in anger that nobody intends to keep.

A boundary is about your behavior

You can't control whether someone uses. You can decide what you will and won't participate in. That distinction is the whole skill.

  • "I won't give money, and I will buy groceries."
  • "I won't lie to your employer for you."
  • "You're welcome here sober; not welcome here high."
  • "I'll drive you to an assessment any day this week."
State the boundary once, calmly, and then live it. Enforcement is quieter than announcement.

Expect it to feel wrong at first

Guilt is not a sign you made the wrong call. Family therapy exists partly to help you hold a boundary without interpreting your own discomfort as proof of cruelty.
